2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities by ShanghaiRanking

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is a yearly ranking that compiles a list of the best institutions in the world using an open methodology and impartial third-party information. ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has been publishing it since 2009, and it is recognized as the precursor and most trustworthy global university ranking.

The 2023 ARWU ranks over 2,500 institutions and publishes the best 1000 universities worldwide. The ranking uses six objective indicators, such as the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles in Nature and Science, and the number of Highly Cited Researchers, to measure universities' academic performance and research impact.

The 2023 ARWU provides interesting facts and trends about the global higher education landscape.

Harvard University tops the list for the 21st year, followed by Stanford and MIT. Cambridge, Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, Caltech, and Chicago are also in the top 10.

Paris-Saclay University remains the best Continental European university, rising to 15th place, followed by ETH Zurich in 20th place.

Tsinghua University moved up four positions to hold the best place in Asia for the first time. At the same time, the University of Melbourne has topped universities in Oceania for thirteen consecutive years since 2011.

For the first time, two Chinese universities, Central South University and Nanjing University, have appeared in the ARWU Top 100. 35 universities enter the Top 1000 for the first time.

Mainland China now dominates the ARWU list, with 191 universities ranking in the Top 1000, outnumbering the United States' 187 universities. However, the United States maintains an overwhelming advantage in the Top 100 level, with 38 universities compared to Mainland China's 10, the United Kingdom's 8, and Australia's 6.
